I understand that morality should be the same for everyone. But it's not because we live in a world without consensus. That, plus following moral principles is often not practiced consistently even by those who claim to have high moral standards. And then are those who claim to have high moral standards who use low moral standards to force their brand of morality on others. I'm suddenly reminded of the Taliban. But still, in this age of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, I say it's preferable to use peaceful methods to persuade people to live morally. Needless to say, it's not that simple. It's never that simple.

Mon, August 15, 2005 - 10:05 PMyou're right.. morals are relative. most people don't stop to think about it. what is moral according to "society" is relative to which society you are in. but then again people think an common moral exists between all humans... but then that's relative. -

Re: Everbody is a moral relativist
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 10:23 PMI hold myself to a very high moral standard. It's rather simple... I believe we should all strive to make the world a better place than how we found it, or at least try not to contribute to making it worse. Basically I try to cause as little harm to the people and things around me as possible. When I see litter, I pick it up and throw it away. I never throw anything out of my car as I drive. I never do anything malicious to my fellow creatures, no matter how inferior they may be to me (I even avoid killing wasps, bees, spiders, etc). When I do something, I always weigh the possible results against my plans to find the best option. I always think about the consequences of my actions, and take responsibility for them if they turn out badly.
