Intelligence positive?

topic posted Tue, July 5, 2005 - 7:36 AM by  Yul
Here's my stupid question of the moment: Do most people consider intelligence to be a positive attribute? It's been my observation that most people DON'T consider intelligence to be a positive attribute. And since it is just an observation, there's a good chance that I'm wrong. But if I'm right, it would explain a lot. For example, it would confirm my suspicion that those who misuse technology the most understand it the least. Because unlike most science-minded people, those who have little understanding of science don't use science to understand the mysteries of the universe. More often, they employ the products of science for (what I call) detrimental purposes like waging war.

Yes! There is so, so, so much more I have to say about this issue. But since I don't have time to bring it all up now, I'll just have to bring it up later.

Stupid people do not see intelligence as an advantage because it's too much effort for them. Intelligent people value intelligence above all else because they know it is the only thing of real value they can claim as their own.

Is it a positive attribute? That depends on whether you have intelligent or stupid friends/acquaintances. If everyone you know is less intelligent than you, too much intelligence is not a very good thing to have. You'll have nothing in common with the people around you. They'll resent you for being different, and you'll resent them for (unintentionally) shutting you out of their world. It makes for a very lonely life. If the majority of your friends/acquaintances are as intelligent as you are, I see nothing wrong with being intelligent.

Personally, despite being quite lonely, I'd rather be intelligent than stupid. There are already more than enough stupid people in the world.

Well - isn't it easier (or perhaps better to say "possible") to get new friends than to try to not be intelligent if you are? It's not all that difficult now to find other intelligent people - unless you find that you're in the top 1% - but even then, this time in history is the easiest for finding whatever odd subset you find yourself a part of. There's a way to make positive out of whatever you are. Intelligence isn't something you can really do much about unless you want to drug yourself silly, anyway.

Lemme tell ya, moving back to south Texas after being absent for ten years is a major culture shock. I lived in Germany where I was required to speak proper english to help the germans understand me. Our ST slang was a bit much for them. Then I move back here with my awesome vocabulary, and the local yokels think I am being snooty. I even have some of the younger college freshman looking at me vacuously when I say a nice $25 word, and I have to dumb it down for them. I find myself dumbing down my speech alot with my fellow classmates, and therefore tend to gravitate towards professors' offices to chat. It is hard being a 34 year old college junior, because the ONLY thing I have in common with my classmates is the fact that we have a class together. It is very lonely for me right now, since I cannot technically "hang out" with my professors yet. I cannot 'hang out' with my fellow classmates because my life is no longer about boozing and humping. It is tough, but I am adjusting. Basically, I read a lot, do research, and come here.

Intelligence is not that much of a positive for an individual. I am not sure where you live or who you hang out with but all my friends and I do is talk about science and invention.

I work in a technical field I use reasoning and logic on a daily basis and so does every one of my friends. Little stock is put into just being happy, we over intellectualize everything and deny the true emotions that others seem to so freely and shamelessly display. It is a burden not a benefit, being the top 2% in IQ is just as much a problem as being the bottom 2%.

      You just described my life.

My friends and family often don't know what to do with me or the things that come out of my mouth, and are intimidated by the ideas I want to discuss, and I, in turn, am consistently dissatisfied with the depth of my connections with most of my peeps.

Intelligence is a positive. In fact, it is what differentiates us from other mammalia on the planet earth. Granted, there are other attributes, but its the way I see it. That being said, some people are "too smart for their own good" (like me), or others are dumb as a box of hammers... but generally, tis a good thing to be intelligente.

Actually, many animals are more intelligent than the humans I know. I don't know if that speaks well of my animal friends or ill of the humans I associate with... I do work in retail, so I guess my observations could be slightly skewed.
